Install Overhead Fixtures
Nothing transforms a room faster than a new light fixture. The dated brass-and-glass builder special can become a modern statement piece in under an hour.
Time Required
30-60 minutes per fixture
Cost
$100-$500+ per fixture
Difficulty
Moderate (DIY possible)
Safety First
- Turn off power: At the breaker, not just the switch. Test with voltage tester.
- Use a sturdy ladder: Never stand on chairs or unstable surfaces.
- Have a helper: Someone to hold the fixture while you wire.
- Support the weight: Heavy fixtures need proper ceiling box rated for weight.
- When in doubt: Hire an electrician. Safety is worth the cost.
Basic Installation Steps
1. Remove Old Fixture
Turn off power, remove globe/shade, unscrew canopy, disconnect wires (note colors), remove mounting bracket if replacing.
2. Install New Bracket
Attach new mounting bracket to ceiling box. Ensure it's level. Most fixtures include universal brackets.
3. Connect Wires
Black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), green/bare to green/bare (ground). Use wire nuts, wrap with electrical tape.
4. Attach Fixture
Tuck wires into box, attach canopy with screws, add bulbs, install shades/globes, restore power, test.
Ceiling Box Considerations
- Standard boxes: Support up to 50 lbs. Fine for most fixtures.
- Fan-rated boxes: Required for ceiling fans. Can handle heavier loads.
- Pancake boxes: Very shallow. May need extension ring for some fixtures.
- Old work boxes: For adding new ceiling lights where none existed.
- Check rating: Look inside box for weight rating stamped on metal.
Pro Tips
- •Photo the wires: Before disconnecting, snap a photo so you remember connections.
- •Use a hook: Some fixtures include a hook to hang while wiring. Or use a carabiner.
- •Pre-assemble: Build as much of the fixture as possible before mounting.
- •LED bulbs matter: Install dimmable LEDs from the start. Match color temperature across fixtures.
