The dining room light is often the most prominent fixture in your home. It sets the mood for every meal and makes a major design statement.

Sizing Guidelines

Fixture should be 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table. 48" table = 24-32" fixture. Never wider than the table.

For rectangular tables: 1/2 to 2/3 the length of table. 72" table = 36-48" linear fixture.

Bottom of fixture 30-36" above table surface. Lower (30") feels intimate, higher (36") keeps sightlines clear.

Add room dimensions in feet, convert to inches. 12x14 room = 26" minimum fixture diameter.

Classic chandelier: Crystal or candle-style. Formal, traditional. Statement piece.
Modern chandelier: Clean lines, geometric shapes. Contemporary spaces.
Linear pendant: Sleek bar with multiple lights. Perfect for rectangular tables.
Drum pendant: Fabric shade, soft diffused light. Transitional style.
Cluster pendant: Multiple pendants at varying heights. Artistic, eclectic.
Lantern: Cage-style with candles or bulbs. Farmhouse, transitional.

Center over table: Not the room. Table placement determines fixture location.
Off-center junction box: May need swag kit or ceiling hook to reposition.
Weight rating: Heavy chandeliers need fan-rated box (50+ lbs).
Adjustable chain: Choose fixtures with removable chain links for height adjustment.
Sloped ceiling: Need sloped ceiling adapter. Most fixtures include one.

•Dimmer is essential: Bright for homework, dim for dinner parties. Non-negotiable.
•Warm light only: 2700K creates flattering light for food and faces.
•Bigger is better: When in doubt, size up. Undersized fixtures look wimpy.
•Consider the view: What does it look like from below? Inside should be attractive.
