Size Statement Fixtures
The most common lighting mistake is going too small. Statement fixtures should make an impact, and that means getting the scale right.

Sizing Formulas
Room-Based Formula
Add room length + width in feet. Convert to inches for fixture diameter. 12ft x 14ft room = 26" diameter fixture.
Table-Based Formula
Fixture should be 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table below it. 72" table = 36-48" fixture.
Entryway/Foyer
Diameter = width of entry in inches ÷ 2. Two-story foyer? Go bigger and hang higher.
Height Considerations
Fixture height should be 2.5-3 inches for every foot of ceiling height. 10ft ceiling = 25-30" tall fixture.
Quick Reference Chart
- 10x10 room: 20" minimum diameter
- 12x12 room: 24" minimum diameter
- 14x14 room: 28" minimum diameter
- 16x16 room: 32" minimum diameter
- 36" round table: 18-24" fixture
- 48" round table: 24-32" fixture
- 72" long table: 36-48" fixture (or multi-light linear)
Linear Fixtures Over Tables
- Length: 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the table.
- Width: Maximum 1/2 the width of the table.
- Centered: Always center over the table, not the room.
- Multiple: If using multiples, space evenly along the table length.
- Height: Bottom of fixture 30-36" above table surface.
Pro Tips
- •When in doubt, go bigger: Undersized fixtures look wimpy. Slightly oversized looks intentional.
- •Mock it up: Use cardboard or paper to visualize size before ordering.
- •Check specs carefully: Listed dimensions may include canopy, chain, or be width vs. diameter.
- •Consider visual weight: Open, airy fixtures can go larger. Solid fixtures feel heavier.
