Best Places for Pendants

Kitchen Island

Most popular location. 2-3 pendants for visual balance. Both task lighting and decorative focal point.

Dining Table

One large pendant or linear fixture. Centers the dining experience. Critical for ambiance.

Entry/Foyer

Sets first impression. Statement piece that welcomes. Size up for impact.

Bedside (Instead of Lamps)

Frees up nightstand space. Modern look. Requires hardwiring or swag kit.

Hanging Heights

  • Over island/counter: 30-36 inches above surface. Closer to 30 if not blocking views.
  • Over dining table: 30-36 inches above table. All diners should see each other.
  • In foyer: Bottom of fixture at least 7 feet from floor. Higher for drama.
  • In open spaces: 7 feet minimum clearance. No bumped heads.
  • Adjustable: Choose fixtures with adjustable chain or rod for flexibility.

Spacing Multiple Pendants

  • Over island: Space 24-30 inches apart, center to center.
  • From island edge: Minimum 6 inches from edge of counter.
  • Quantity: 2 for 4-5ft island, 3 for 6-8ft island.
  • Odd numbers: 1 or 3 pendants usually looks better than 2 or 4.
  • Size: 12-18 inch diameter for most kitchens. Don't go too small.

Pro Tips

  • Match metals loosely: Pendants don't have to match hardware exactly. Coordinated, not matchy.
  • Consider the shade: Opaque shades direct light down. Clear/glass spreads light around.
  • Check the view: What do you see when looking at the pendant from below? Inside should look nice.
  • Dimmable essential: Kitchen pendants should always be on a dimmer for flexibility.
