Types of Picture Lights

Traditional Picture Light

Brass or bronze bar mounted above artwork. Classic, timeless look. Shines light down onto art.

Sizing Guide

  • Light width: Should be 1/3 to 1/2 the width of the artwork.
  • Small art (under 20"): 12-14 inch picture light.
  • Medium art (20-36"): 16-24 inch picture light.
  • Large art (36"+): 24-36 inch picture light or multiple lights.
  • Position: Centered above artwork, 3-6 inches above frame.

Mounting Options

  • Hardwired: Cleanest look. No visible cord. Requires electrician.
  • Plug-in: Cord runs down wall. Can use cord cover to minimize visibility.
  • Frame-mounted: Clips onto top of frame. Easiest install.
  • Battery/rechargeable: No wires at all. Rechargeable LEDs last weeks.
  • Wall wash alternative: Recessed adjustable above artwork works too.

Pro Tips

  • LED for art: No heat or UV. Protects artwork from fading.
  • High CRI: 90+ CRI shows true colors of the artwork.
  • Avoid glare: Angle light to minimize reflection on glass-framed pieces.
  • Match finish: Coordinate with other room metals (brass, black, etc.).
