Cove Lighting Locations

Crown Molding Cove

LED strip hidden behind crown molding, angled to light ceiling. Most common residential application.

Tray Ceiling

Light hidden in the step of a tray ceiling. Dramatic effect highlighting the ceiling architecture.

Soffit/Bulkhead

Kitchen or bathroom soffits with light shining up. Adds dimension to dropped ceiling areas.

Wall Niche

Recessed wall areas with hidden lighting. Highlights texture or decorative objects.

LED Strip Selection

  • High density: 60-120 LEDs/meter for smooth, dot-free lighting.
  • High output: Need enough brightness to illuminate ceiling. 600+ lm/m.
  • 24V preferred: Less voltage drop over long runs. Essential for cove.
  • Tunable white: CCT strips let you change warm to cool as desired.
  • COB strips: Chip-on-board LEDs create perfectly even light line.

Installation Considerations

  • Distance from ceiling: 4-6 inches from ceiling for even wash.
  • Aim angle: LEDs should point at ceiling, not horizontally.
  • Hide the strip: Use lip, molding, or valance to conceal LEDs.
  • Power supply: Calculate total wattage, use appropriate driver.
  • Access: Plan for future maintenance and bulb/strip replacement.

Pro Tips

  • White ceilings: Cove lighting works best with white or light ceilings that reflect light.
  • Dimmable required: Cove lighting should always be on a dimmer for ambiance control.
  • Use aluminum channel: Helps with heat dissipation and creates even light line.
  • Connect corners: Use solderless connectors or solder for seamless runs.
