Critical Measurements
Countertops
- • Length of each run (front edge)
- • Depth from wall to front edge
- • Backsplash height if included
- • Sink cutout dimensions
- • Cooktop cutout dimensions
Appliances
- • Refrigerator opening: height, width, depth
- • Range opening: width between cabinets, depth
- • Dishwasher opening: under-counter height, width
- • Microwave space dimensions
Cabinets
- • Height, width, depth of each cabinet
- • Door dimensions for replacement
- • Drawer front dimensions
- • Distance between upper and lower cabinets
- • Hardware hole spacing
Measurement Tips
- Measure at multiple points: Walls aren't perfectly straight. Measure at top, middle, and bottom.
- Note obstructions: Outlets, switches, pipes, vents—mark their locations.
- Include trim details: Crown molding, baseboards affect cabinet fit.
- Draw a simple floor plan: Even rough sketches help visualize measurements.
- Use consistent units: All inches, or all feet/inches. Don't mix.
- Double-check critical dimensions: Appliance openings especially. Measure twice.
Pro Tips
- •Bring measurements shopping: You'll need them when looking at appliances and materials.
- •Photograph your notes: Backup your handwritten measurements with photos.
- •Measure existing appliances: Before shopping, know your current sizes for comparison.
- •Account for handles: Refrigerator and oven handles add depth—measure door clearance.
