Update Outlet and Switch Covers
It takes 5 minutes per plate and costs $3-8 each, but fresh outlet and switch covers eliminate that "old house" feel instantly. Screwless plates look especially clean.
Time Required

Cost
$20-$80 for whole room

Very Easy
Cover Plate Options
- Screwless (Decora style): Snap-on covers with no visible screws. The most modern look. $3-8 each.
- White gloss: Bright white is the standard for modern rooms. Matches white trim and baseboards.
- Matte white: Slightly softer look than gloss. Better against warm white walls.
- Metallic: Brushed nickel, satin brass, or matte black for a premium touch. $8-15 each. Match to light fixture finishes.
- Paint-match: Paintable plates that blend into the wall color. Most invisible option for accent walls.
While You're At It
- Replace yellowed outlets: Old almond or ivory outlets look dated next to new white plates. Swap the outlets themselves for $1-2 each (turn off breaker first).
- Add USB outlets: Replace one or two outlets with USB-equipped versions ($15-25 each) near seating areas. Eliminates the need for charging blocks.
- Upgrade to Decora switches: Rocker-style switches look cleaner than small toggle switches and match screwless plates perfectly.
Pro Tips
- •Count before you shop: Walk the room and count every outlet and switch. It's common to undercount — check behind furniture and near the floor.
- •Keep it consistent: Use the same style and finish throughout the room. Mixing styles (toggle switches with Decora plates) looks unfinished.
- •Buy extras: Pick up 2-3 extra plates in case any break during installation or you find outlets you missed.
