Inspection Checklist
- Flooring: Check for gaps at edges, squeaky spots, transition strips secure, baseboards tight
- Walls: Look for missed nail holes, paint drips, caulk gaps in molding, uneven touch-ups
- Lighting: Test every light, every dimmer, every switch. Verify no flickering or buzzing.
- Outlets: Test all outlets with a plug tester. Confirm USB outlets charge properly.
- Furniture: Ensure all pieces are level and stable. Check that drawers and mechanisms work.
- Window treatments: Verify rods are level and secure. Panels hang evenly. Shades operate smoothly.
- Built-ins: Test shelves for level, doors for alignment, and verify mounting is solid.
Common Touch-ups
- Paint touch-ups: Keep leftover paint for nail holes, scuffs from furniture moving, and spots you missed
- Caulk gaps: Run a finger along every caulk line. Re-caulk any spots that have pulled away or have gaps.
- Tighten hardware: After a week of use, check that light fixtures, curtain rods, and shelving brackets are still tight.
- Clean everything: Construction dust settles everywhere. Wipe down all surfaces, vacuum the floor, and clean windows for the full reveal.
Pro Tips
- •Check at night: Walk through the room with the lights on after dark. Lighting issues and shadow gaps are much more visible at night.
- •Live with it for a week: Some issues only emerge with daily use. That squeaky board or awkward furniture placement becomes obvious after a few days.
- •Save all receipts and manuals: Organize warranties, paint codes, flooring model numbers, and receipts in one folder. Future you will be grateful.
