Add or Update Side Tables

Every seating position needs a surface within arm's reach for a drink, phone, or lamp. Side tables don't need to match — in fact, mismatched tables look more curated.

Time Required

1-2 hours shopping

Cost

$100-$400 per table

Sizing and Placement

  • Height: Should be within 2 inches of the sofa arm height. Too tall or too short feels awkward when reaching for a drink.
  • Width: At least 18 inches wide to hold a lamp, drink, and book. Larger is better if space allows.
  • Placement: Within arm's reach of the seated person — about 0-6 inches from the sofa arm.
  • Both sides: Ideally, each end of the sofa has a table. Accent chairs also benefit from a small table nearby.

Style Approaches

Matching pair

Symmetrical and formal. Works best in traditional rooms with matching lamps on each side.

Complementary pair

Same general style but different shapes or sizes. One could be a drum table, the other a drawer table. More modern and curated.

Mixed materials

One wood, one metal and glass. Creates visual interest and works in eclectic or transitional spaces.

Pro Tips

  • Consider drawers: Side tables with a drawer keep remotes, coasters, and chargers hidden. This eliminates visual clutter on the surface.
  • Don't match the coffee table exactly: Side tables in a different material than the coffee table creates a layered, designed look. Same material everywhere looks like a furniture set from the '90s.
  • Budget option: Side tables are great places to save money. Thrift stores, estate sales, and Facebook Marketplace frequently have solid wood tables for under $50.
  • Think about power: Some side tables include built-in USB ports or outlets. If not, plan for a lamp cord that can reach the nearest wall outlet.
