Install New Flooring

Click-lock LVP and laminate are weekend DIY projects. Hardwood typically needs a professional. Either way, start from the longest, most visible wall and work toward the door.

Installation Steps (Click-Lock / Floating)

1

Start from the longest wall

Begin along the longest, most visible wall. Place 1/4" spacers against the wall — floating floors need an expansion gap all the way around the room.

2

Stagger the seams

Offset end joints by at least 6 inches between rows. Random staggering looks more natural than a repeating pattern. Start each row with the cut-off from the previous row.

3

Click planks together

Angle the tongue into the groove at about 20° and press down flat. Use a tapping block — never hammer directly on the plank edge or you'll damage the locking mechanism.

4

Cut around obstacles

Use a jigsaw for curved cuts around door frames and vents. An oscillating multi-tool trims door casings so planks slide underneath for a clean look.

Tools You'll Need

  • Essential: Tape measure, utility knife, tapping block, pull bar, spacers, speed square
  • Cutting: Miter saw or circular saw for straight cuts, jigsaw for curves
  • Helpful: Knee pads, chalk line, oscillating multi-tool for undercutting door frames
  • For hardwood: Pneumatic nailer or stapler (rent for $40-$60/day), mallet, drill

Pro Tips

  • Mix planks from multiple boxes: Color and grain vary between boxes. Pull from 3-4 boxes at once to distribute variation naturally across the room.
  • Undercut door frames: Don't try to cut planks to fit around casings. Cut the casing so the plank slides underneath for a seamless finish.
  • Work left to right: Most click-lock systems are designed for left-to-right installation. Check your specific product's instructions.
  • Save leftover material: Store at least one box of extra planks. If a section gets damaged years later, you'll have matching material for repairs.
