Plan & Design Phase|Step 4 of 32

Create Project Timeline (1-3 Months)

A well-sequenced timeline prevents trade conflicts, reduces idle days, and keeps your renovation on schedule. Each phase depends on the one before it, so getting the order right is critical.

Typical Renovation Timeline

1

Weeks 1-2: Demo and structural work

Remove walls, install temporary shoring, and put in permanent beams. This is the loudest, messiest phase. Frame any new walls or niches once beams are in place.

2

Weeks 3-4: Rough electrical, HVAC, and plumbing

Run new wiring, add recessed light housings, install floor outlet boxes, and route HVAC ducts. All rough-in work happens while walls are open. Schedule inspections before closing walls.

3

Weeks 5-6: Drywall, flooring, and fireplace

Hang and finish drywall, install or refinish hardwood floors, and update the fireplace surround. These trades can sometimes overlap if working in different areas of the room.

4

Weeks 7-8: Trim, built-ins, and paint

Install crown molding, baseboards, wainscoting, and built-in cabinetry. Then prime and paint the entire room. This is when the space starts looking finished.

5

Weeks 9-12: Finishing, furnishing, and inspection

Install light fixtures, window treatments, and switch plates. Move in furniture, hang art, and style the room. Schedule the final building inspection and take your after photos.

Common Lead Time Items

  • Custom built-ins: 4-8 weeks from order to installation
  • Hardwood flooring: 1-3 weeks for delivery, plus 3-5 days acclimation
  • Stone fireplace surround: 2-4 weeks for fabrication
  • Custom window treatments: 3-6 weeks for production
  • Gas fireplace insert: 2-4 weeks for delivery
  • Furniture orders: 6-14 weeks depending on manufacturer

Pro Tips

  • Order materials early: Place orders for long-lead items (flooring, built-ins, fireplace insert) during the planning phase so they arrive on schedule.
  • Add 20% buffer to every phase: Tasks almost always take longer than estimated. A 6-week project should be planned for 7-8 weeks.
  • Coordinate trade schedules: Your contractor manages subcontractor scheduling. Confirm electricians, floor installers, and painters are booked in advance.
  • Avoid holiday seasons: Contractors are busiest in spring and fall. Winter renovations often have better availability and pricing.
