Measure Ceiling Heights
Ceiling height determines what fixtures you can use. A stunning chandelier in a low-ceiling room becomes a head-bumping hazard.

Fixture Types by Ceiling Height
8 Foot Ceilings (Standard)
Flush mounts or semi-flush only. Keep fixtures within 12 inches of ceiling. No hanging pendants in walkways.
9 Foot Ceilings
Semi-flush mounts work well. Small pendants okay over tables/islands. Still avoid long drops in traffic areas.
10+ Foot Ceilings
Full range of options. Chandeliers, long pendants, dramatic fixtures. Can make a real statement.
Vaulted/Cathedral Ceilings
Measure at lowest and highest points. May need sloped ceiling adapters. Consider visual balance.
Key Measurements to Take
- Floor to ceiling: Standard measurement for each room.
- Table to ceiling: For dining/island pendants. Subtract 30-36 inches for fixture bottom.
- Door frame height: Usually 6'8" or 7'. Fixtures can't hang lower than this in traffic paths.
- Existing fixture box location: Where is the electrical? Centered or off-center?
- Room dimensions: For sizing fixtures proportionally.
Minimum Clearances
- Walking areas: Bottom of fixture must be at least 7 feet from floor.
- Over dining table: 30-36 inches above table surface.
- Over kitchen island: 30-36 inches above counter. More if people sit at island.
- Over bed: Clear ceiling fans by 8-9 feet. Low fixtures okay if not directly over.
- Entryway: 7 feet minimum. Higher for two-story entries.
Pro Tips
- •Measure from floor: Not just guessing. A tape measure tells the truth.
- •Record everything: Write down each room's ceiling height for shopping trips.
- •Check fixture specs: Product listings show height. Calculate from your ceiling.
- •Adjustable options: Many pendants have adjustable chain or rod length.
