Create Your Lighting Inventory
Room Name
List every room including hallways, closets, and outdoor spaces. Don't skip utility areas.
Fixture Type
Ceiling mount, recessed can, pendant, sconce, lamp, etc. Note the style (modern, dated, builder-grade).
Bulb Information
Bulb type (LED, incandescent, CFL), wattage, color temperature if known. Check bulb base type.
Problems Identified
Too dim, too harsh, wrong color, ugly fixture, shadows, glare, no dimmer—note all issues.
Common Problems to Look For
- Single overhead fixture: One light source = flat, unflattering light.
- Wrong color temperature: Cool white in living room, mismatched bulbs.
- No layers: Only ambient, no task or accent lighting.
- Dark corners: Unlit areas that make room feel smaller.
- Dated fixtures: Builder-grade "boob lights," brass from the '90s.
- No dimmers: Can't adjust brightness for different activities or moods.
Pro Tips
- •Use a spreadsheet: Columns for room, fixture, bulbs, problems, priority. Easy to update.
- •Check switch locations: Note if switches are in inconvenient places.
- •Count outlets: For lamps and plug-in options. Note where you need more.
- •Ask family members: Others might notice problems you've gotten used to.
