Countertops Phase|Step 8 of 33
Prep Base Cabinets
Strong, level base cabinets are essential for successful countertop installation. Identify and fix issues before the fabricator arrives.

Pre-Installation Checklist
1
Check for level
Place a 4-foot level across cabinets. Mark high and low spots. Fabricator can shim minor variations, but major issues need fixing first.
2
Inspect cabinet structure
Open doors and check box condition. Look for water damage, delamination, or weak spots. Stone counters are heavy—weak cabinets can sag.
3
Add corner support if needed
L-brackets or corner braces add strength for heavy counters. Install at corner joints and every 24 inches along long runs.
4
Remove old countertops carefully
Cut caulk lines with utility knife. Disconnect plumbing. Lift carefully to avoid damaging cabinet tops. Old laminate may be glued down.
Weight Considerations by Material
| Material | Weight (per sq ft) | Reinforcement Needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate | 1-2 lbs | No |
| Butcher Block | 3-5 lbs | Usually no |
| Quartz (3cm) | 15-20 lbs | Maybe |
| Granite (3cm) | 18-22 lbs | Yes, for older cabinets |
Pro Tips
- •Ask your fabricator: Most will inspect cabinets during templating and flag issues before install.
- •Clear the area: Remove everything from base cabinets and counters before demo day.
- •Protect floors: Lay drop cloths or cardboard. Stone installers will drag heavy pieces.
- •Don't forget plywood: If installing undermount sink, add plywood around cutout for support.
