Sizing Guidelines
Pendant Size Formula
- Width: Island length ÷ number of pendants = max pendant width
- Mini pendants (6-10"): Use 3 over a standard island
- Medium pendants (12-18"): Use 2 over a standard island
- Large pendant (24"+): Use 1 statement piece
Example: 6-foot island ÷ 3 pendants = max 24" apart. Use pendants 8-12" wide.
Height Guidelines
Bottom of Pendant to Counter
28-34 inches. Lower for task lighting, higher for visual balance. 30" is a safe starting point.
Bottom of Pendant to Floor
If no counter below (over sink or table): 60-66 inches from floor to bottom of fixture.
Ceiling Height Adjustments
For every additional foot of ceiling height above 8 feet, add 3 inches to hanging height.
Pendant Styles
- Globe/Sphere: Classic and versatile. Clear glass shows bulb. Frosted diffuses light.
- Drum/Cylinder: Modern and clean. Fabric or metal shades.
- Industrial: Exposed bulbs, metal shades, cage details. Warehouse chic.
- Lantern: Traditional or coastal. Adds architectural interest.
- Linear/Multi-light: One fixture, multiple pendants. Simplifies installation.
Spacing & Placement
- Distance apart: 24-30 inches between pendants, center to center.
- From island edge: Centered on island. Stay 6" in from ends.
- Odd numbers: 3 pendants often looks better than 2 on long islands.
- Stagger heights: Intentionally varied heights is a design trend. Stay within 3-6" difference.
Installation Considerations
- Existing junction box: Easy swap if box is centered over island.
- Moving junction box: Requires electrician. Opens ceiling. Plan for drywall repair.
- Swag kits: Can hang pendant off-center from existing box. Hook runs along ceiling.
- Canopy size: Must cover junction box. Standard is 5".
- Weight rating: Check box rating. Heavy fixtures may need reinforced box.
Pro Tips
- •Install before countertop is final: Easier to adjust height when you can stand at counter level.
- •Put on dimmer: Task bright for cooking, low for entertaining.
- •Match other finishes: Coordinate with faucet, hardware, or other fixtures.
- •Consider adjustable cord: Allows height tweaking after install.
