Before You Buy: Measurements

Critical Measurements

  • 1.Backset: Distance from door edge to center of handle hole (usually 2-3/8" or 2-3/4")
  • 2.Door thickness: Most are 1-3/4", but measure yours
  • 3.Hole diameter: Standard is 2-1/8" but older doors vary
  • 4.Distance between holes: If you have separate deadbolt and handle holes

Take your old hardware to the store to ensure a proper match, or buy from retailers with good return policies.

Installation Steps

1. Remove Old Hardware

Unscrew and remove existing handle, deadbolt, and strike plates. Keep screws organized.

2. Check the Fit

Test fit new hardware before fully installing. Ensure latch aligns with strike plate hole in frame.

3. Install Latch/Bolt First

Insert the latch or deadbolt mechanism into the door edge. Secure with screws.

4. Attach Exterior Hardware

Position exterior handle/escutcheon, feeding any connecting pieces through the door.

5. Attach Interior Hardware

Align interior hardware, connect to exterior piece, and secure with screws.

6. Install Strike Plate

If needed, install new strike plate on door frame. May require chisel work to fit properly.

7. Test Everything

Test the lock, handle, and deadbolt from both inside and outside multiple times.

Smart Lock Consideration

While you're updating hardware, consider upgrading to a smart lock. Benefits include:

  • • Keyless entry with codes, fingerprint, or phone
  • • Grant temporary access to guests or service providers
  • • Lock status notifications and auto-lock features
  • • No more lost keys or hidden spare keys

Popular options: Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, August Smart Lock. Prices range from $150-350.
