The Layering Order (Bottom to Top)

1

Fitted Sheet

Foundation layer. Make sure corners are tucked tightly under mattress. No wrinkles.

2

Flat Sheet (Optional)

Top edge folded back 6-8 inches at head. Tuck sides under mattress for hotel look, or leave loose for casual feel.

3

Blanket or Coverlet (Optional)

Lighter weight layer. Useful if duvet is too warm sometimes. Fold at foot of bed or layer under duvet.

4

Duvet or Comforter

Main visual layer. Pull up to pillows or fold back 1/3 from head. Center pattern if applicable.

5

Throw Blanket

Draped at foot of bed, folded in thirds lengthwise, or casually tossed. Adds texture and color.

Pillow Arrangement Options

Minimal (2-3 Pillows)

Two sleeping pillows propped against headboard. Optional: one lumbar pillow in front. Clean, modern look.

Classic (4-5 Pillows)

Two Euro shams (26x26) against headboard, two standard sleeping pillows in front, one accent pillow center. Balanced, elegant.

Luxe (6-7 Pillows)

Two king shams, two Euro shams, two sleeping pillows, one or two accent pillows. Hotel or magazine look.

Color Coordination Guidelines

  • Start with neutrals: White, ivory, gray, or soft blue sheets are most versatile
  • Add interest with duvet: Pattern or color here has biggest impact
  • Echo colors in pillows: Pull 1-2 colors from duvet for accent pillows
  • Contrasting throw: Different texture or complementary color adds depth
  • Mix textures: Combine smooth, woven, and plush elements

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Too matchy-matchy: Everything from one set looks flat. Mix pieces.
  • Wrong size duvet: Queen beds look better with king duvets for drape
  • Pillow overkill: More than 7 pillows becomes a chore every morning
  • Ignoring texture: All smooth fabrics lack visual interest
  • Visible sleeping pillows: Cover with shams or decorative cases when making bed

Pro Tips

  • Size up your duvet: A king duvet on a queen bed creates a luxurious drape on the sides.
  • Fluff daily: Give pillows and duvet a quick shake each morning to maintain loft.
  • Karate chop pillows: The center dent in throw pillows creates that styled look.
  • Keep it simple for daily: Full styling is for weekends. Daily make: fitted sheet, duvet, two pillows.
