Replacing an Outlet

1

Turn off power at breaker

Find the correct breaker and flip it off. Test outlet to confirm no power.

2

Remove cover plate and outlet

Unscrew cover, then remove the two screws holding outlet to box. Pull outlet out gently.

3

Note wire positions

Take a photo. Black (hot) goes to brass screws, white (neutral) to silver screws, green/bare to ground.

4

Disconnect wires

Loosen screws and remove wires, or insert screwdriver in release slot for push-in connectors.

5

Connect new outlet

Match wire colors to correct terminals. Hook wire clockwise around screw, tighten securely.

6

Reinstall and test

Push outlet into box, screw in place, attach cover. Turn on breaker and test with lamp.

GFCI Installation Tips

  • LINE vs LOAD: Wires from breaker go to LINE terminals. Downstream outlets go to LOAD.
  • One protects many: A single GFCI can protect all downstream outlets on the circuit.
  • Test monthly: Press TEST button, outlet should turn off. Press RESET to restore.
  • Won't reset?: Check for tripped breaker, faulty wiring, or moisture in box.

Pro Tips

  • Match all outlets: Inconsistent colors (almond mixed with white) looks worse than all one color.
  • Add USB outlets: USB-equipped outlets cost $15-25 but are very convenient in bathrooms.
  • Consider rocker switches: Modern paddle-style switches look cleaner than toggle switches.
  • Organize your box: Neatly fold wires back into the box. Don't cram - it can damage connections.
