Replace Vanity Light
New light fixture modernizes the entire bathroom. One of the highest-impact upgrades.
Time Required
30-60 minutes
Cost
$40-200
Difficulty
Moderate
Safety First
ALWAYS turn off power at the breaker before removing fixtures.
- • Flip the breaker, not just the wall switch
- • Test with a non-contact voltage tester before touching wires
- • Have someone hold the fixture while you disconnect wires
Choosing a Fixture
Bar Lights (Horizontal)
2-5 bulbs in a row above mirror. Traditional style, good light distribution.
Sconces (Vertical)
Mounted on sides of mirror. More flattering light, modern look. Requires two fixtures.
Integrated LED
Sleek, modern fixtures with built-in LEDs. No bulbs to replace but can't change color temp.
Industrial/Farmhouse
Exposed bulbs, metal cages, or barn-style shades. Popular for character bathrooms.
Before You Buy
- • Measure your space: Fixture should be as wide as mirror or slightly narrower
- • Check mounting: Measure existing junction box location and hole spacing
- • Match finishes: Coordinate with faucet, towel bars, cabinet hardware
- • Consider bulb type: LED-compatible fixtures save on energy bills
- • UL Damp rated: Required for bathroom use - check the label
Installation Steps
Turn off power at breaker
Flip the breaker for the bathroom circuit. Test with voltage tester to confirm.
Remove old fixture
Remove bulbs and shades first. Unscrew mounting screws. Support fixture while disconnecting wires.
Disconnect wires
Untwist wire nuts. Note which wires connect: black to black, white to white, ground to ground.
Install mounting bracket
Attach new fixture's mounting bracket to junction box. Level it if bracket has adjustment slots.
Connect wires
Black to black, white to white, ground to ground or green screw. Twist wire nuts on securely.
Mount fixture
Tuck wires into junction box. Attach fixture to mounting bracket. Secure all screws.
Install bulbs and test
Add bulbs, turn on breaker, flip switch to test. Install shades or globes last.

| Type | LED for efficiency and longevity |
Pro Tips
- •Get a helper: Someone to hold the fixture while you work on wires makes this much easier.
- •Take photos: Photograph wire connections before removing old fixture for reference.
- •Cover the junction box hole: If new fixture's base is smaller, you may need a larger canopy.
- •Add a dimmer: While you're at it, replace the switch with a dimmer for adjustable ambiance.
