Upgrade Light Fixtures

Swapping builder-grade ceiling fixtures for statement pieces is one of the fastest ways to elevate a room. Most fixtures swap in under 30 minutes with basic tools.

Time Required

30 min per fixture

Cost

$50-$500 per fixture

Difficulty

Easy to Moderate

Fixture Types

  • Chandelier: Best for rooms with 9+ foot ceilings. Bottom should hang 7 feet above the floor. Diameter should be roughly the room's dimensions in feet added together in inches (12x14 room = 26" fixture).
  • Semi-flush mount: Ideal for 8-foot ceilings. Drops 4-8 inches from the ceiling, giving visual interest without hanging too low.
  • Flush mount: Best for low ceilings under 8 feet. Modern options look much better than the old "boob light" builder-grade fixtures.
  • Pendant cluster: 2-3 smaller pendants instead of one large fixture. Creates a modern, dynamic look. Works well over seating areas.

Installation Steps

1

Turn off the breaker

Not just the switch — flip the breaker. Test with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm no power. This is non-negotiable for safety.

2

Remove the old fixture

Unscrew the canopy, disconnect the wires (note which goes where), and remove the mounting bracket if the new one is different.

3

Install the new fixture

Mount the new bracket, connect wires (black to black, white to white, green/copper to ground), tuck wires into the box, and secure the canopy.

Pro Tips

  • Check the junction box rating: Heavy fixtures (over 50 lbs) need a fan-rated junction box. The standard box holds up to 50 lbs.
  • Match finishes across the room: Keep all fixture metals consistent — all brushed nickel, all matte black, or all brass. Mixing metal finishes looks intentional if done sparingly.
  • Consider LED-integrated fixtures: No bulbs to replace and energy-efficient, but the fixture is done when the LEDs eventually die (typically 50,000 hours / 15+ years).
