A living room update takes 1-4 weeks depending on scope. Sequencing matters — do messy work first and detail work last to avoid redoing anything.

Recommended Sequence

1

Week 1: Flooring first

Flooring is the messiest work and must happen before furniture arrives. Remove old flooring, prep the subfloor, and install new material.

2

Week 2: Walls and built-ins

Paint, install molding or wainscoting, and build shelving. Wall work creates dust and drips — do it before furniture is in the room.

3

Week 3: Electrical and fixtures

Install recessed lights, upgrade fixtures, and add dimmers. Electrical work needs clear access to walls and ceilings.

4

Week 4: Furniture and finishing

Move in furniture, hang window treatments, and add accessories. This is the fun part — save it for last so nothing gets damaged.

Lead Times to Plan For

  • Flooring materials: 1-2 weeks for delivery, longer for specialty orders
  • Furniture: 2-8 weeks depending on retailer (custom upholstery takes 8-12 weeks)
  • Built-in shelving: 1-3 weeks for custom pieces
  • Light fixtures: Usually in stock, but designer pieces can take 2-4 weeks
  • Window treatments: Custom drapes take 3-6 weeks; ready-made ship in days

Pro Tips

  • Order materials first: Place orders in Week 1 of planning even if install is Week 3. Lead times are the #1 cause of delays.
  • Book contractors early: Good electricians and flooring installers book out 2-4 weeks. Don't wait until you're ready.
  • Build in buffer days: Add 2-3 extra days between phases. If flooring runs long, wall work can still start on time.
  • Plan living without the room: You'll lose use of the living room for 1-2 weeks during flooring and wall work. Have a backup space ready.
