Difficulty

Moderate to Hard

Built-in Options

IKEA Hack Built-ins ($300-$800)

Use IKEA Billy or Havsta bookcases as the base. Add crown molding at the top, baseboard trim at the bottom, and filler strips on the sides to look like true custom built-ins.

Semi-Custom ($1,000-$2,500)

Build plywood carcasses and add cabinet doors, adjustable shelves, and trim. More work than IKEA hacks but allows custom sizing for your exact wall dimensions.

Full Custom ($2,500-$4,000+)

Hire a carpenter or cabinet maker for fully custom units. Best for unusual wall shapes, built-in lighting, or integrated media centers with cable management.

Design Considerations

  • Open vs. closed: Mix open shelves (display) with closed cabinets (storage) for the most functional result. A 60/40 open-to-closed ratio works well.
  • Depth: Standard bookshelf depth is 12 inches. Deeper shelves (16-18") work for media equipment or larger display items.
  • Symmetry: Built-ins flanking a fireplace or window look best symmetrical. Standalone units can be asymmetrical for a more modern feel.
  • Lighting: Puck lights or LED strips inside the shelves elevate the look dramatically. Wire for these before installing the units.

Pro Tips

  • Anchor to wall studs: Built-ins must be secured to studs for safety, not just to drywall. Loaded shelves are extremely heavy.
  • Paint the back wall: Painting the wall behind the shelves a contrasting color (darker or an accent tone) creates visual depth and makes displayed items pop.
  • Plan for power: Include outlets inside the cabinets for charging stations, media equipment, or shelf lighting. Much easier to wire before installing than after.
