Arrangements to Try
Float the Sofa
Pull sofa 6-12 inches from the wall. Add a console or narrow table behind it if there's room.
Angle the Furniture
Angle seating at 45° to a corner. Creates visual interest and better conversation flow.
Create Zones
Define a reading nook with a chair and lamp. A work area with a small desk. A conversation grouping.
Face Seating Toward Each Other
Two chairs facing the sofa. Creates intimate conversation area instead of "staring at the TV" setup.
Before You Move Anything
- Photograph current layout: You might want to go back.
- Measure furniture: Know dimensions before you start shoving.
- Clear the floor: Remove rugs, side tables, and obstacles first.
- Use furniture sliders: $10 and saves your back and floors.
- Have a helper: Heavy sofas need two people.
Living with the Change
- Give it 3-7 days: New layouts feel weird at first. Your brain adjusts.
- Use the room normally: Watch TV, read, entertain. Does it work?
- Notice what's better: More light? Better flow? Cozier?
- Notice what's worse: Can't reach things? Too cramped? Fix it.
- Take new photos: Compare to before. Sometimes you can't tell until you see photos.
Pro Tips
- •Try at least 3 layouts: Your first idea might not be the best.
- •Consider the view from the door: What do guests see when they walk in?
- •Think about natural light: Position seating to enjoy windows, not block them.
- •Symmetry isn't required: Asymmetrical balance often looks more interesting.
