Coffee Table Sizing Rules
- Length: 1/2 to 2/3 of sofa length. 84" sofa = 42-56" table.
- Height: Same as sofa seat cushions, or 1-2 inches lower.
- Distance from sofa: 14-18 inches. Easy reach without bumping knees.
- Distance to chairs: At least 14 inches from other seating.
- Walkway clearance: 30 inches minimum behind table.
Table Shapes by Room
Rectangular
Best for standard sofa layouts. Pairs well with linear seating. Most common choice.
Round or Oval
Better traffic flow—no corners to bump. Great for small spaces. Softens angular rooms.
Square
Works with L-shaped sectionals. Creates symmetry. Can feel large in small rooms.
Nested or Clustered
Two or three smaller tables instead of one. Flexible, moveable, modern.
Alternatives to Traditional Coffee Tables
- Upholstered ottoman: Adds softness. Use tray for drinks. Double as extra seating.
- Trunk or chest: Storage inside. Vintage or modern. Flat top for drinks.
- Bench: Long and narrow. Works in tight spaces. Unique look.
- Large tray on pouf: Casual, moveable. Easy to push aside.
- No table at all: With small side tables, you might not need one.
Pro Tips
- •Use painter's tape: Mark the footprint of a potential table on the floor to test size.
- •Consider storage: Shelf underneath keeps remotes and books accessible but hidden.
- •Think about materials: Glass makes small rooms feel larger. Wood adds warmth.
- •Don't forget styling: A beautiful table deserves a styled top—books, tray, plant, candle.
