Cost
$100-$400
Difficulty
Moderate (DIY possible)
Ideal Configuration
Best: Side Sconces
Sconces flanking the mirror at face height eliminate shadows. The gold standard for vanity lighting.
Good: Overhead Bar Light
Multi-light bar above mirror. Common and functional. Can create under-eye shadows if sole source.
Best of Both
Side sconces plus overhead for ambient. Most even illumination. Requires multiple fixtures/outlets.
Backlit Mirror
LED light behind mirror perimeter. Modern look. Works alone for simple bathrooms.
Placement Guidelines
- Side sconces: 60-65" from floor to center. 36-40" apart.
- Overhead bar: 75-80" from floor. Within 1-3" above mirror.
- Bar length: Should be about 75% width of vanity/mirror.
- Double sinks: Each sink needs its own lighting zone.
- Mirror width: Sconces work best with mirrors 24" or wider.
Light Quality Matters
- Color temperature: 2700-3000K is flattering. 4000K for makeup accuracy.
- CRI 90+: Essential for seeing true skin tones and makeup colors.
- Brightness: 1600+ lumens total for the vanity area.
- Diffused light: Frosted globes or shades soften light, reduce glare.
- Dimmable: Full brightness for tasks, dim for nighttime.
Pro Tips
- •Avoid clear bulbs: They create harsh shadows. Use frosted or covered globes.
- •Wet vs. damp rated: Damp rated for most bathrooms. Wet rated if in shower zone.
- •Match other fixtures: Coordinate finish with faucet and hardware.
- •Try before buying: Test bulbs at home if possible. Return if color is off.
