Style Nightstands
Nightstands are prime real estate. A lamp, a book, and one beautiful object create a curated vignette that feels intentional.
Time Required
15-30 minutes
Cost
$0-100
Difficulty
Very Easy
The Essential Formula
1
Lamp (Required)
Task lighting for reading. Bottom of shade at eye level when sitting in bed.
2
Something to Read
Current book, magazine, or kindle. Stack 2-3 books if you like the look.
3
Something Beautiful
Small plant, vase with stem, candle, or decorative object that sparks joy.
4
Something Functional (Hidden)
Glasses, lip balm, charger in drawer. Use trays to corral small items.
What NOT to Have on Nightstands
- • Piles of stuff: Papers, receipts, random items—find homes elsewhere
- • Work materials: Keep laptops and work out of bedroom
- • Too many electronics: Phone charger is fine, but not a tech station
- • Old water glasses: Bring fresh water each night
- • Medication bottles: Use a pretty box or drawer organizer
- • Excessive decor: 3-5 items max. Less is more.
Matching vs. Mismatched Nightstands
Matching Pair
- • Creates symmetry and calm
- • Traditional, polished look
- • Style similarly (same lamp, mirrored arrangement)
Mismatched
- • More casual, collected feel
- • Keep same height and general scale
- • Unify with same lamp or similar styling
Pro Tips
- •Use trays: A small tray corrals items and makes cleaning easy—just lift the tray to dust.
- •Vary heights: Lamp, stack of books, and small object at different heights creates visual interest.
- •Add living element: Small plant or fresh flower cutting adds life. Faux is fine too.
- •Clear the surface regularly: Nightstands are clutter magnets. Weekly reset keeps them styled.
