Window Treatment Types

Floor-Length Curtains

Classic, elegant, adds height. Best for living rooms. Should kiss or puddle on floor.

Roman Shades

Tailored, clean lines. Fabric folds up when raised. Modern or traditional depending on fabric.

Roller Shades

Minimalist, disappears when up. Light filtering or blackout. Modern aesthetic.

Woven Wood/Bamboo

Natural texture, casual warmth. Filters light beautifully. Coastal or bohemian vibe.

Curtain Hanging Rules

  • Hang high: Rod 4-6 inches below ceiling or crown molding. Makes windows look taller.
  • Go wide: Rod extends 8-12 inches past window frame on each side. Makes windows look bigger.
  • Length matters: Floor-length standard. 1/2 inch above floor or slight puddle (1-3 inches).
  • Fullness: Panel width should be 1.5-2x the window width for proper drape.
  • Two panels: Always two panels, even on small windows. One panel looks wrong.

Fabric & Color Guide

  • Light filtering: Linen, cotton blends. Softens light, maintains privacy during day.
  • Blackout lined: For light control and energy efficiency. Essential for media rooms.
  • Color choice: Match wall color for seamless look, or contrast for drama.
  • Pattern: Solid curtains if you have patterned furniture. Vice versa.
  • White/ivory: Classic, bright, works with everything. Never goes wrong.

Pro Tips

  • IKEA curtains work: Hemmed to right length, they look expensive. Great starting point.
  • Layer for function: Sheer underneath, blackout panels on outside. Best of both.
  • Iron or steam: Wrinkled curtains look cheap. Fresh out of package needs pressing.
  • Curtain rings: Clip rings or grommets. Pleated tape for formal. Rods, not tension.
